Saluhan is pleased to present the first of our 2022 community film screenings, a three-part series of iconic works by the Lolo of Filipino cinema, Kidlat Tahimik.
Perfumed Nightmare (Mababangong Bangungot) (1977) tells the story of a young Filipino jeepney driver from Barangay Balian, Laguna, infatuated with the United States and the technological advancements of the West embodied in the concept of space travel. The film follows the character’s eventual disillusionment through a comedic and poignant exploration of neo-colonialism in the Philippines, and the insidious powers of American influence in the Asia-Pacific. Though Perfumed Nightmare was Tahimik’s debut film, it is considered to be his most famous work and heralded a classic of Filipino cinema.
